In 2024, the United States Mint commemorates the anniversary of its very first silver dollar design, a historic image introduced not long after the mint itself was established. Founded in 1792, the US Mint debuted the Flowing Hair Silver Dollar in 1794, the first Liberty-inspired design ever struck by the mint. The Flowing Hair Dollar first entered circulation in October 1794. Designed by Robert Scot, the 1^st Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, this historic silver dollar marked the beginning of the Liberty coinage series. It was produced only in 1794 and 1795 before being replaced by the Draped Bust Dollar. Original estimates suggest that just over 1,700 Flowing Hair Dollars were issued in 1794 and more than 160,000 in 1795. Today, fewer than 150 of the original Flowing Hair Dollars are believed to exist, making this design a cherished piece of American history.

All 2024 1 oz US Mint 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medals offered here are housed in a protective capsule and presented in a specially designed box from the US Mint. Accompanying the medal is a Certificate of Authenticity to certify its origins and purity. Additionally, each medal features the 230 Privy Mark on the obverse field. Within the total mintage of 75,000 medals, only 1,794 of these Flowing Hair Medals possess this 230 Privy Mark!

The obverse of the 2024 230^th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal features the classic Flowing Hair Liberty design, a graceful left-profile image of Liberty with her hair cascading freely and her features rendered with delicate detail. This early representation of Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars, the 2024 date, and a special 230th-anniversary privy mark.

On the reverse of 2024 1 oz US Mint Flowing Hair Silver Medals, you’ll find the heraldic eagle design originally used on the Flowing Hair Dollar. This image depicts a small bald eagle with its wings extended, perched on a laurel wreath. Though this design was retired after just two years due to perceptions that it lacked the strength and grandeur befitting a national emblem, it remains an enduring symbol of the mint’s early efforts.
