Fast forward to the 20^th century, and one of the final acts of these assay offices was to refine silver bars that were dumped into the market in 1980 and 1981. Established in 1854, the New York Assay Office was primarily responsible for evaluating the purity of gold and silver bullion deposited by miners, refiners, and traders. The San Francisco Assay Office, also opened in 1854, was born out of the need to evaluate the massive amounts of gold discovered during the California Gold Rush.
