Introduced in 1986, the Gold Kangaroo was struck from 1986 to 1989 under the monicker of Australian Gold Nugget. The coins featured a different depiction on each weight of a historic gold nugget discovered in Australia. In 1990, Perth Mint switched to the image of the native marsupial on the reverse of the coins, offering a new depiction of the kangaroo each year, but sharing that design on all weights.
All 2025 1 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins come in MintID CertiCards. Each card seals the coin at the center with an NFC microchip included that is AES-128 encrypted. With the MintID app, authenticating your coin is easy. Ensure NFC scanning is turned on, then open the app and follow the guided steps. You won’t need to share any private information to complete the process.
On the obverse of 2025 Australian Gold Kangaroos, you will find an effigy of King Charles III. His Majesty appears on the Gold Kangaroo for just the second time in 2025, with this left–profile relief from Dan Thorne depicting the monarch without a crown on his head.
The reverse of 2025 1 oz Gold Kangaroo Coins comes with an image of two kangaroos in an arid setting on the Australian continent. In the foreground, one of the kangaroos is lying down as the other one bounds across the dunes in the background.
