The design that graces the obverse of the 2025 American Gold Eagle was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The Irish-American artist was commissioned directly by President Theodore Roosevelt to help lead the charge in revitalizing the designs on American coins. President Roosevelt was seeking to reimagine American coins with images reflecting the nation’s growing power and prominence.

On the obverse of 2025 American Gold Eagles is Saint-Gaudens’ historic design. He created this groundbreaking design with Liberty set in front–facing relief as she walks toward the viewer. Her right hand holds a torch aloft, while her left carries an olive branch. There is a ring of 50 stars around the field, sunrays behind Liberty, and the U.S. Capitol Building.

The reverse side of all 2025 1 oz Gold Eagle Coins comes with an image of the American bald eagle. In July 2021, the US Mint changed the reverse design for the first time ever. Replacing Miley Busiek’s original 1986 design, this 2020 design from Jennie Norris shows the head of the bald eagle in left-profile relief with intricate details for its physical features.
